Student Code of Conduct |

1. PRINCIPLES: At Trafalgar High School: ¨ Students have the right to be educated in a secure environment, without intimidation, bullying or harassment, where they are valued and treated with courtesy, as they develop their talents, interests and ambitions. ¨ Students are expected to recognise that teachers and other members of the school community have the right to teach and work in an atmosphere of order and cooperation. ¨ Individuals should treat their own property and the property of others with care and respect. ¨ Students are expected to develop self-discipline and to accept responsibility for their actions. ¨ In order for these principles to operate effectively, it is important to note that: ¨ Parents have an obligation to support the school in its efforts to maintain a productive learning and teaching environment. ¨ Principals and staff have an obligation to implement the Code of Conduct fairly, reasonably and consistently. ¨ Staff need to recognise and promote positive behaviour in all students.
2. STANDARDS AND RULES: At Trafalgar High School, students are expected to: ¨ Be aware of, and comply with, school policies relating to such issues as discipline, harassment and uniform. ¨ Work to their full potential, to be punctual and to be prepared for class at all appropriate times. ¨ Understand that substance abuse, including the possession or use of alcohol, tobacco and illegal drugs, is strictly prohibited. ¨ Not bring dangerous items to school. ¨ Be polite. Language and behaviour must not be abusive, sexist, racist or in any way offensive or threatening. ¨ Follow the directions of staff promptly. ¨ Take personal responsibility for their own safety and well-being, including complying with current health and safety requirements. ¨ Ensure the safety and well-being of others through appropriate behaviour. ¨ Not leave the school grounds without permission. ¨ Present a positive image of the school when on excursions.
3. APPROACH TO STUDENT MANAGEMENT: Trafalgar High School staff are committed to implementing strategies that: ¨ Give positive reinforcement ¨ Improve self-esteem ¨ Encourage personal reflection ¨ Encourage friendship ¨ Acknowledge and respect differences ¨ Encourage sharing, tolerance and compassion ¨ Enhance and encourage parent-teacher contact ¨ Are consistent and fair in applying logical consequences ¨ Evaluate teaching methods ¨ Encourage awareness and understanding of school rules and policies ¨ Result in the keeping of accurate records ¨ Include peer mediation as a means of resolving student conflict.
4. EXAMPLES OF SANCTIONS USED: At Trafalgar High School, the following are examples of sanctions which will be used if this Code of Conduct is breached: ¨ Community service ¨ Detention (possibly after school) ¨ Copying out of Code of Conduct ¨ Written apology ¨ Restitution of damage caused, with logical consequences to reinforce school rules (eg: desk cleaning for having written graffiti) ¨ Withdrawal of privileges (eg: exclusion from excursions, cancellation of lunch passes) ¨ Withdrawal from class (to Assistant Principal’s office or alternative classroom setting) ¨ Behaviour contract ¨ Conduct card ¨ Notification to parents in writing, by interview or by telephone ¨ Suspension (in-school and out-of-school) ¨ Expulsion in line with DE&T guidelines. |
