Homework Policy

Rationale

Students benefit from completing appropriate homework.  It enables them to develop organisational and time management skills, self-discipline, skills in using resources, and personal responsibility for learning.  It is vital that an appropriate balance between the demands of study and recreational pastimes is maintained.  Homework is seen as an integral part of the whole learning process.

 

Purpose

The purpose of this policy is to communicate to students, parents and teachers what the school’s expectations are in regard to homework, and to define what is regarded as homework.  Also to ensure that students complete homework on a regular basis.

 

Guidelines

Homework is defined as work undertaken out of class that is both challenging and achievable:

¨ work not completed in class;

¨ specifically set homework e.g. projects (with defined limits);

¨ revision, including studying for tests;

¨ extension work;

¨ independent reading.

 

The amount of homework that should be completed over five days during the week:

¨ Years 7 and 8 up to one hour;

¨ Years 9 and 10 up to one and a half hours;

¨ Year 11 one and a half to two hours;

¨ Year 12 two and a half to three hours.

 

All students are to record homework details and due dates in their diary.  The school supplies these diaries, which must be brought to every class.  Subject teachers should ensure that homework is written in the diary.  House group teachers should check the homework diary regularly.

 

Parents have an important role to play with homework.  Parents can provide assistance to enable homework to be completed, but need to be careful of the amount of input given, such as the work completed ends up the student’s own.

 

This policy needs to be communicated to parents and discussed with students.

 

Teachers need to be aware of the problems caused by homework expectations being intensified at the end of term.

 

Students need to take responsibility for the management and completion of set homework.
