Transition Program

The transition from Grade Six to Year Seven is often challenging for both students and their families. Students not only have to cope with the demands of a different school structure, but they also need to make new friendship groups. Trafalgar High School draws students from thirty-three feeder Primary Schools which means that many Year Seven students begin the school year without knowing another student in their year level.

The Transition Programme endeavours to make new students feel safe and confident about beginning secondary schooling. The Transition Programme provides students who come from smaller Primary Schools with an extra transition day before Orientation Day on the 9th of December. The extra day allows students to make friendships with others who are in a similar position to themselves. After attending the day students feel more confident attending Orientation Day. Students with special learning needs are provided with a series of shorter transition visits prior to Orientation Day.

Transition extends into the 2009 school year. Students are provided with extra support from a range of teachers to help them navigate through the many challenges that arise from beginning secondary school. The Year Seven camp will be held in March 2009, early in the school year as it provides students with a relaxed environment in which to make friends and interact with staff more informally.
