VCE

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) is a new qualification designed to provide additional pathways for Years 11 and 12 students interested in 'hands on learning' and vocationally oriented career options.  VCAL is an alternative course to VCE, delivered to Year 11 and 12 students.

In 2007 Year 11 students at Trafalgar High School have the opportunity to select and enrol in the VCAL - Intermediate level.

VCAL students will be required to develop a Learning Program in consultation with their teachers. The Learning Program must comprise four Curriculum Strands:

  • Literacy and Numeracy -  VCAL English, VCE English &   VCE Foundation Maths Units 1 & 2.

  • Work Related Skills - Including industry specific units from Vocational Education & Training (VET) at Certificate Level ll or above.  Involving study and work out of school at TAFE. There will be fees charged to the students by the training provider.

  • Industry Specific Skills - Including part time work, new apprenticeships, traineeships, or work placement.

  • Personal Development - Including a VCAL Award Level Unit (PDS) where students are required to achieve the learning outcomes. For example: community projects, Land Care project, volunteer work at schools and nursing homes. Responsible Service of Alcohol (RSA) course. Units from the VCE such as Health and Human Development, Art, or a Certificate in First Aid may also be included in this strand.

Day to Day Structure

The individual's Learning Program will, in most cases, mean:

  • 3 days at school completing English, Maths and Personal Development Skills with an additional VCE unit, (Outdoor Education, Health & Human Development or Design Technology).

  • 1 day (Wednesday) at TAFE or other training provider outside the school (at times this may include work placement)

  • 1 day (Friday) in a work placement setting (part time work, work placement, new apprenticeship). To begin at the start of Term 2.

To be awarded Intermediate Level VCAL students will need to achieve 10 Credit Points. 6 of these credits must be at the award level (Intermediate) and 2 of these 5 credits must be from the Literacy Strand and the Personal Development Skills Strand.
